Chapter 16 : Information About Underground Ruin

I went to the Adventurer’s Guild along with 《Beelzera》 and Mani.

Though I wanted to go to the Adventurer’s Guild by myself, Mani tagged along since she wanted to confirm the performance of 《Beelzera》 with her own eyes.

Well, it’s not like I could form a party with a stranger when I have yet to grasp the power of my own magic sword.

I think that there was no one more reassuring than Mani as my porter.

…. When I was busy thinking about those matters, Mani gradually completed the preparation to close her smithery.

Though I’m really grateful to her for forming a party with me when I really need it, I really have no excuse to reject her help.

The Adventurer’s Guild was a place that provided various help for adventurers such as: providing a training course for the beginner adventurers, giving warnings about Unique Demons and or the locations of Monster Pools, a place for transactions for Magic Cores or Battle Bones, and act as the mediator for someone who was looking to join a party.

I’ve also received their training courses a few years ago.

And the reason for my current visit to the Adventurer’s Guild was to look for a suitable labyrinth to go into.

Seeing a demon on the surface was a rarity, especially after the Capital of the Kingdom formed a large scale subjugation force to eradicate demons within the Kingdom.

But the demon beasts have their own strongholds which were built deep underground, a place that not just any human could enter.

Thus, many of those underground labyrinths, or widely known as Demon Labyrinths were the nest of those Demon Beasts.

Although the Demon Labyrinths acting as the den of Demon Beasts was treated as common knowledge in this world, that wasn’t always true.

I sat on the chair having a discussion with Mani about the place to test the《Beelzera》, while considering the fact that I’m currently penniless.

Since I don’t want to put more burden on Mani after this, I wanted to look for a place to harvest Battle Bone while also testing my new magic sword capabilities.

Moreover, Beelzebub’s avatar which I summoned prior to the creation of the 《Beelzera》 could instant-kill a Rat which took a combination of both Gilbert and Morgan to kill just one of them.

Currently I should be able to maintain her avatar for up to 3 minutes.

If everything went according to my plan, I should be able to bring back at least two battle bones.

「…. Then… that means, 《Den of the Battle Rat》 is just the right place and yet…. Ha~h.」

I heaved a sigh.

According to the information from the Adventurer’s Guild, the 《Den of Battle the Rat》 was currently far more dangerous than before, compared to when I had just escaped from it.

The Rats who were gathered in the monster pool on the lower floor were climbing up to the upper floor and they might break out of the Demon Labyrinth at any given time.

The Adventurer’s Guild has given their warning along with the subjugation commission for that labyrinth.

But, that commission wasn’t directed towards a novice adventurer like me.

This matter should be left to the army, but seeing that they’re still sitting on their hands without doing anything, it was left to the Adventurer’s Guild instead. It seemed that the army really had no intention to move their forces at all.

Same as ever, huh. They wouldn’t mobilize their forces until the very last minute.

「Well since we really have to avoid that place, how about diving into 《Romburgh’s Underground Ruin》 instead? 」

「《Romburgh’s Underground Ruin》 huh….」

《Romburgh’s Underground Ruin》 was a demon labyrinth created by the devil around two thousand years ago as a base. It was also the location where the Two-headed Wicked Ancient Dragon was revived in the War Against the Ancient Dragons.

Surely, 《Romburgh’s Underground Ruin》 was closer, less dangerous, and on the safer side among the Demon Labyrinths.

We’re guaranteed to meet a D-rank demon beast as long as we dive down to the UG 2nd floor.

「Also, I’ve heard a rumor not too long ago that someone saw a Gold Maimai [Golden Demon Snail]」

Mani lowered her voice as she told me that rumor.

「R-Really? 」

She nodded to me.

Maimai [Demon Snail] was a demon beast with two long tentacles and a peculiar vortex-like shell on its back.

Its height was about as tall as a child.

Despite 《Imu》 revealing that the Maimai was a D-ranked demon beast with respect to the amount of Odo in its body, they’re not that powerful. Their danger did not lie in their raw power, rather they’re agile and they have a variety of battle arts. (Battle arts are something similar to but also different from magic since only mana or fighting spirit is required instead of a magic core.)

Despite not being that powerful, the value of their battle bone was very high. Since it was easy to raise your level by defeating them and in addition to their valuable shell, they became the target for many adventurers.

And a Gold Maimai was the more powerful variant of Maimais.

The Gold Maimai appearance was similar to normal Maimai plus a golden lustre on their skin. Although they’re much faster than normal Maimai, their Odo value [EXP] and battle bone value [Money] were higher too.

「Well it might be fake news but. It’s just right since it’s not like we can dive into the 《Den of the Battle Rat》 either.」

『No matter how quick that snail is, it’ll fall before this mistress sooner or later. This is to show my gratitude to your delicious soup earlier. Now let’s go, I can’t wait for your next dishes afterall.』

Beelzebub said as she laughed heartily.

「Thank you very much but….. Uhm, please refrain from saying anything in public places like this. People will look at me for speaking to myself you see.」

I lowered my head as I whispered those words to 《Beelzera》.

『Mu-Mugu….』

The magic core that was embeded into the crossguard of 《Beelzera》 flickered.

「Shall we go to the receptionist to buy the latest map of 《Romburgh Underground Ruin》? 」

「No need to do that, I’ve managed to buy a cheap map of that ruin in secret from the kind people of the previous party who used my porter service. I planned to sell the original map when I was in trouble with securing money for my food but…. Naturally, I’ve made a copy of the map.」

「You… did such things too.」

Mani was looking at me as she squinted her eyes.

I unintentionally averted my gaze from her.

Basically, private transactions of the demon labyrinth map were illegal.

Due to the appearance of many fake maps in the market, the transaction of maps was monopolized by the Adventurer’s Guild.

Anyone who was caught selling maps will be penalized and fined.

In the case of one selling a copy of a map provided by the Adventurer’s Guild, outside of their expulsion from the adventurer’s guild, they’ll also be chased out from the city or imprisoned.

And since the army backed the Adventurer’s Guild, investigation about this kind of thing was extremely strict.

… I knew not selling my map would be for the best, but my livelihood was already in jeopardy. I had no choice. I think that my punishment wouldn’t be very heavy even if they found out that I sold my map because it was an emergency situation.

「…. Good grief, why didn’t you ask me for my help if your livelihood was already in jeopardy since a long time ago?」

Mani ended up heaving a sigh.

「…. Well I’ve already troubled you almost every day so I… at least wanted to somehow get out of that situation by myself.」

「 Even if you say that… seeing you go so far as to commit such a minor offence makes me rather afraid. Especially recently, I heard an unpleasant rumour that the army of this city is filled with nothing but violent people. That’s why you need to hold back from doing such reckless actions.」
