Chapter 215: Because I Like Shu Nuan (19)
When Wen Zhigu submitted an application to leave the academy, Master Chen came to persuade her, but she still insisted on leaving.
In the eyes of many people, Wen Zhigu was being willful. Uncaring of the gossip, she insisted on leaving the academy.
Qi Yue caught up shortly after she’d walked out of the academy, shouting at her, “Zhigu!”
Wen Zhigu heard his voice, paused slightly, and turned her head.
Qi Yue stopped in front of her. In a puzzle voice, he asked, “Why are you leaving?”
“No reason. I just want to leave.”
The tone of her voice was light, as if withdrawing from school was an inconsequential matter.
He narrowed his eyes and stared at her.
“Is it because of Teacher Ji?”
She glanced at him before looking him up and down. She didn’t speak for a while.
Qi Yue gauged her reaction. He took a deep breath and looked at her in disbelief.
“You… like him?”
“No.”
“Why do you… Hug and kiss him that day. And why, not long after you returned from Yushuicheng, he stopped teaching at the academy…”
Wen Zhigu looked straight into his eyes and said, “This has nothing to do with you.”
She didn’t want to put an innocent bystander between her and Ji Xubai. It wasn’t as if Qi Yue could change anything even if he knew, she thought. She had no reason to drag him into her mess.
However, to Qi Yue, Wen Zhigu’s indifference undoubtedly meant that she’d refused to give him a place in her heart. Qi Yue was a proud person, so his heart felt a little sour. He frowned and said, “I just wanted to remind you that you have a bright future. You don’t have to give up everything for such a person. He is a former teacher of yours…”
“It has nothing to do with you,” Wen Zhigu repeated.
Qi Yue stared at her for a moment, and then turned away.
Wen Zhigu watched as Qi Yue walked away. She glanced at his figure for a few moments, before withdrawing her eyes and going down the steps.
It had been snowing in the capital the previous two days. When crossing the bridge, Zhigu saw that a thin layer of frost had formed on the water under the bridge.
She stood on the bridge with her gaze hanging downward. Her hands rested on the cold stone railings as she slowly made her way across the bridge. Then, a hand reached out from behind and wrapped around her. The person lowered his head and placed his lips beside her neck. A soft voice spoke.
“The date is set for the 27th of this month.”
Wen Zhigu looked straight ahead. She was held in his hands. She closed her eyes as tears began to fall.
As her hot tears fell on the back of his hand, Ji Xubai’s hold tightened. He paused, turned her around to face himself, and while frowning, reached out to wipe her tears. He said, “No more crying.”
“Ji Xubai, Teacher Li tried to convince me a lot, and I understood all of what he said, but I told him I gave up, you know? I gave up. I gave up…”
Zhigu stared at him with tears in her eyes. She didn’t know what her reason to continue living was anymore.
That was the first time Ji Xubai saw Wen Zhigu’s undisguised heartbreak. He raised his eyebrows, wanting to say something, but she suddenly grabbed her lower abdomen, back bending down with pain. His face turned pale. Ji Xubai picked
her up and headed to the direction of the hospital. He held her in his arms and tightened his big hands, only to find that Wen Zhigu was lighter and thinner than he recalled.
