Chapter 68: Shadow of the Past

Lu Qiu scratched her hair in doubt. By any chance, did I scrape his skin with the comb’s teeth? But the teeth were very round and blunt so it should be giving the feeling of having a massage instead of pain.

She didn’t hurt herself when she tried it before, so she was certain that it shouldn’t hurt the giant cat too. Alas, his face was so frightened that it couldn’t be faked.

This reaction… It’s like a psychological stress response triggered by seeing the comb. Could it be that he had been hurt by the comb before?

At this moment, Ruth came in with the dinner he prepared after finding that the two were already back home.

And upon seeing the brush in Lu Qiu’s hand the moment he went inside the room, he immediately rushed to her side in two or three strides and snatched the brush away, throwing it in a distant corner. His pair of eyes looked at her coldly, the same way it did this morning— as if he wanted to kill her.

Lu Qiu couldn’t help but take a step back.

She didn’t know that the giant cat had a psychological trauma from the comb. Had she known about it, she would never use the brush on him.

Seeing that the panther was still approaching her step by step, Lu Qiu took a step back once again. She retreated until she practically reached the edge of the cat’s nest.

And just when Ruth was only a step away from Lu Qiu, Wells opened up his mouth to speak.

“Ruth, enough, you’re dismissed.”

Ruth could only sigh as he was somewhat reluctant to draw back. Nonetheless, he still retreated after arranging the plate on the table.

It turned out that the dog blood1 level in the animal world was no less than that of humans, or maybe even more intense.

As intelligent animals, they should conduct themselves as proper individuals. This behavior wasn’t righteous and disregards the proper intelligent animal behavior.

Even though Wells was the third Prince and a member of the royal family, his mother didn’t have a noble background. She was a Pallas cat; without intelligence. Nevertheless, she was very clever and was not worse than the other intelligent animals, she could even speak simple words of the common language.

But because she couldn’t pass the test for intelligent animals, no one had admitted that she was an intelligent animal.

After his birth, Wells wasn’t aware of his father’s existence. With his mother, he lived in the cold highlands, where the resources were scarce and there wasn’t much food to eat. The young Wells had to go hunting by himself in order to survive. At that time, he was not as strong as he is now, flying without fear of anything. For the sake of hunting some foods to eat, his body was constantly covered with injuries.

Not long after, Felixin discovered his existence and took him back to the royal court.

All of a sudden, he became the third prince. His looks, his birth origin, and the education he has been receiving, all the things he had to take part in were out of his element. Moreover, this father of his also didn’t spare him a little bit of his attention.

To make things worse, the caretaker who was assigned to take care of him was a large, ill-tempered dog several times his size. Every time he needed to attend an event, he would be dressed, groomed, and sheared.

But the tines used to comb his hair were very sharp, and although they had not caused him to bleed, the pain he felt was still unbearable for the young Wells.

Gradually, he became afraid of grooming after enduring the pain for such a long time. Then, at the time when he became stronger, he killed the dog but the shadow it left behind still remained.

Lu Qiu, feeling a little guilty and a little aggrieved, stood against the edge of the cat’s nest for a long time.

Wells fell from the ceiling and walked slowly towards her. Instead of holding her in his arms like usual, Wells bit his back collar and carried her on the dining table for dinner.

Lu Qiu apologized to him in the middle of their meal, but Wells only looked up at her, then dropped his head and continued eating again.

Unfortunately, they could not understand each other’s language, making her words of apology useless.

After dinner, Wells continued to concentrate on cleaning his paws.

Lu Qiu stood on the table with remorse filling her heart as she stared at the giant cat blankly.

She just wanted to help him take care of his fur; she didn’t know she couldn’t use the comb.

Obviously, he was still angry because she had been looking at the panda more than him before.

Ruth left the room after taking the dishes away, and by the time he came back, he was now carrying various objects in his hand.

He kept bringing in things, arranging them in an awkward way and soon enough, a small house with only half the roof gradually appeared. Inside this mini house, there lies a bed less than two meters long, covered with a thick velvet blanket.

To her surprise, it was a tiny house for herself— they were now going to live separately.

If it was when she arrived here for the first time, living in a place like this would definitely make her ecstatic, feeling like she was flying on clouds. But now, she only stood there foolishly on the spot.

Why? Is it because of that comb?
