Chapter 21 – Throwing One’s Weight Around (1)

Shen Ziyang added fuel to Shen Ziyao’s story of how Shen Ziqiao had brazenly contradicted the ninth prince. He indignant rattled that if it weren’t for her rudeness, the ninth prince might have personally helped him in his studies.

The Shen family is known for producing men for the military. However, even if Shen Xiao’s rank is that of the highest general, he is always a little inferior to a civil official. Moreover, his only direct son from the first wife is not fond of scholarly arts. Although the second son is third-ranked prefectural magistrate, his two sons were still underage.

At the moment, only Shen Ziyang qualified to take the children’s test. Old madam Shen also expects him to come back as a literary champion in the future to make up for Shen Zhong’s regret on only reaching the 16th place in the highest imperial civil service examination.

And the ninth prince is renowned for his literary talent being the highest in the capital. Numerous people dream of getting his advice, but that ominous person unexpectedly deterred them from going near the ninth prince.

“Is she still going against the ninth prince?” Old madam Shen sneered, “Is she doing it deliberately just to attract the ninth prince’s attention?”

“Such a method is too foolish.” Shen Ziyang also believes that this was another of Shen Ziqiao’s gimmick to attract the ninth prince.

Old madam asked, “How did the ninth prince react?”

“He was so livid that he couldn’t speak. I’ve never seen such a shameless girl before. To even go as far as to use such a…deplorable method to attract attention.” Shen Ziyang felt he lost his face with Shen Ziqiao’s actions.

“This is not good.” Old madam Shen continued, “Neither your father nor your eldest brother is in the capital. Although the ninth prince does not hold any important position in the court, he always has a high status and to offend him is not beneficial for our Shen family. Let us go and make amends with him in person.”

Shen Ziyang immediately offered, “Grandma, let me go. I’ll apologize too.”

“All right, but that damned girl can’t go out anymore. It’s as if she’s with some madness lately; all she does it get into trouble.” Old madam Shen furiously said, finding her dislike for Shen Ziqiao growing.

“Grandma, she did it on purpose.” Shen Ziyang added.

Old madam Shen replied in disgust, “If it weren’t for her, your father could have a decent wife today.”

How nice would it be if she didn’t exist… Shen Ziyang silently thought.

“Grandmother, this grandchild won’t disturb your nap any longer. I’ll depart now and study.” Shen Ziyang humbly bowed and excused himself.

Old madam Shen nodded with satisfaction, “You may go.”

But before Shen Ziyang could leave, a servant rushed inside in a hurry. “Madam, there’s an uproar over the third miss’ side.”

“What’s the matter now?” Old madam Shen asked crankily. She was already impatient, hearing terrible news about Shen Ziqiao after another.

The servant girl, Cui Liu, hesitated for a moment before saying, “The third young miss is in the kitchen making a ruckus for lady Li. She also… ordered people to beat lady Li.”

Blood rushed to the old madam Shen’s head. “Does she want to rebel?”

While it is true that somebody wanted to rebel, Cui Liu explained that the culprit in question was Shen Ziqiao’s servant girl.

***

Cui Ping formerly served the old madam Shen, who then placed her under the unruly and willful third young miss’ tutelage. She was full of unwillingness knowing that the old lady did not look kindly at the third miss.

Furthermore, Shen Ziqiao was the only master who had no position in the family. She had no care for her dignity, nor respect even at the mention that she was the old lady’s granddaughter. Even the servant girls did not regard her with good feelings.

But the third young miss didn’t seem to sense that her demeanor was displeasing. She still went her own way and made the old lady angry all day long, unlike the other two young misses, who would do anything to coax the old lady.

Cui Ping knew that she wouldn’t be able to demand such a thing from the kitchen for the powerless third miss. As she lifted the soft curtain and came out, she saw two little maids standing on the steps. They were servants newly selected for the family.

“Hong Ying, Hong Yu, please go to the kitchen and tell them that third miss hasn’t eaten her lunch yet. Let the lady in charge of the kitchen steam a bass and cook eight treasures rice that third miss likes.” Cui Ping pointed to the young maids and ordered them.

Hong Ying is a maid with a strong temperament. On the other hand, Hong Yu is her older sister. They were both maids of the Qiao Xin courtyard, who lacked the requirements to serve as Shen Ziqiao’s personal maids.

When they heard Cui Ping’s order, they immediately did as they were told and went to the kitchen.
