Chapter 1 – My Life as a Cannon Fodder Begins (1)
It was a sweltering hot day in June in the capital. The sun scorched the earth, as a full and gorgeous carriage pulled in front of the doors of the Thousand Buddha Temple.
“The ninth prince will come to see you. Just wait first in the side room; I will send someone over to notify you.” Among the two ladies, it was the older one who spoke first. Her countenance was elegant and refined. Moreover, she was a calm beauty. She is the third miss of the Sheng Family—Sheng Peiyin.
The other lady, who was younger and had a more youthful beauty compared with the older one, nodded gently before a complex expression flitted across her face. She is Shen Ziqiao, the third miss of the deceased first wife.
Shen Ziqiao had just turned 13 this year. And although she looks pretty and lovely, she is known for her rash and stubborn nature. For years, since she turned 11 years old, she had been longing for the ninth prince and had irrationally vowed to stalk him wherever he would make his appearance.
However, the usually irrational girl today looked quite different than usual. Sheng Peiyin looked at the composed girl in front of her for a moment, but she couldn’t find anything strange after watching her for a while and hence dismissed the thought away.
“What’s wrong?” Sheng Peiyin softly asked as she held the other girl’s hand in a comforting gesture.
Shen Ziqiao’s round face gave a bright smile like the sun and answered, “I’m just nervous.”
Hearing this, Sheng Peiyin smiled and tidied up her sideburns. She comforted the girl, saying, “Our third young lady Shen has the beauty of a goddess. Any man with good taste in this city will surely be moved when they see her.”
The ninth prince had already seen her countless times and still regarded her as a ferocious beast. Then could it be the ninth prince had no taste? Thinking so, Shen Ziqiao laughed sarcastically in her heart. If she was going to coax her, she should find a better reason!
Soon after, they entered the temple together.
Behind the Thousand Buddha Temple, there was a row of rooms for the Buddhist pilgrims serving as side rooms. Since the ninth prince was coming to listen to the abbot’s lecture today, the numerous people invited today went somewhere else, leaving the backyard tranquil.
Sheng Peiyin took Shen Ziqiao to one of the side rooms, where sandalwood smoke curled up with a faint fragrance, calming the heart.
“Put the curtains down.” Sheng Peiyin ordered a servant maid behind her. Afterward, she pointed to the screen in the room, saying to Shen Ziqiao, “Hide behind there for now. I’ll go outside and take a look.”
Before Shen Ziqiao could give an affirmative reply, Sheng Peiyin had already pushed her behind the screen.
Shen Ziqiao only had time to see the half of her silver-white beaded muslin dress drag through the floor in haste before the sound of the door closing punctuated the silence.
It’s sunny outside, yet, inside the side rooms, it’s as cold as spring. The lighting in the room was dim, causing one to be unable to see their surroundings and its furnishings.
The third miss, who was born from the prestigious Sheng family, actually dared to help do such an immoral and vulgar thing.
Today, Sheng Peiyin had come to her, telling her that she would set her up with the ninth prince and let her hide in the chamber where he was resting, making her take advantage of this time to entangle with him. Afterward, Sheng Peiyin would come back with the abbot and let the ninth prince be left with no way out except to be responsible for her tarnished reputation.
After all, Shen Ziqiao’s reputation for being wayward and willfulness has long spread all over the capital, so it’s not surprising that Sheng Peiyin would use this against her for her revenge.
If it’s done genuinely for her sake, Shen Ziqiao wouldn’t mind. Unfortunately, this was all a set-up; the person who would appear in the side room would not be the ninth prince.
How could she know Sheng Peiyin’s plot against her?
It’s because she accidentally transmigrated into a revenge novel set in a historical period; she had become the daughter of the villain much hated by the reincarnated heroine.
She knew that the plot would revolve around the heroine who was scheming against those responsible for her demise. However, she had only read the novel half-way and was unaware of how the story would end.
And while she was in the middle of reading the novel, she had fallen asleep, only to wake up in a daze. It took her a long time to realize she had transmigrated inside the character of the book, who is bound to be a cannon fodder later on.
Now, she was brought to the Thousand Buddha Temple by Sheng Peiyin where the plot starts: she was unfortunately about to be framed by the heroine.
