Chapter 30: Adventurer Fedor

Fifteen years ago, in the garden of a certain orphanage in Romburgh.

『What are you going to do after you leave this place, Fedor-niisan?』

A girl called out to a tall, brown-haired youth before her.

『Of course, I’ll become an adventurer. I’ll become someone as famous as the sword saint, Zelios-sama! And then, I’ll make a killing by becoming an adventurer too! And one day, I’ll make sure to somehow repay this orphanage for raising me up. Thus making a killing is my number one priority.』

The youth called Fedor-niisan said.

『Every adventurer is the same inside the labyrinth. Well, The primary factors that determine if an adventurer was a winner or a loser boils down to how prepared and how skilled the person was.. Somehow, it makes you feel excited right?』
『Surely, that fits Fedor-niisan the most… I mean, I’m stupid and weak. I don’t think someone like me can become an adventurer.』

『Don’t put a limit on yourself like that. Asche, I know that you’re a hard worker and you’re meticulous. Besides, you have elemental mastery, and it has yet to blossom unless you train with your own magic vessel. I mean, it’s impossible to train a battle art on your own.』

Fedor shook his head and then pondered for a while with his hand on his chin.

『The most important thing for you right now is looking for your own merit. Shouldn’t you start by looking at your own advantages? I’ll turn thirteen in half a year, that’s why I leave this orphanage one year earlier than you, Asche. One year later, if you wanted to become an adventurer, come and find me, I’ll drill the basics into your body. If you still consider yourself not strong enough to become an adventurer by then, let’s look for another path together.』

『R-Really! Y-You mean I can still be with Fedor-niisan even after leaving this orphanage?』

Fedor was smiling wryly when Asche asked.
Fedor then pointed up his index finger.
This was something akin to his habit which he always did to gather everyone’s attention before raising the volume of his voice.

『But Asche, make sure that you never neglect your studies in reading, writing, arithmetic, and theology even after I leave this place. Although that knowledge isn’t that necessary for an adventurer, you will find that many were kicked out from the party cause they’re illiterate. And learning those will help you to land another job! …. Maybe.』

『Y-Yes, I understand.』

Asche nodded happily.

A middle-aged man then approached the two as he called out to them.

『Be very careful out there, Fedor-kun…. But, no need to worry since we sometimes receive a subsidy from the army.』

He was this orphanage’s director, La’s.

In the Ryuz kingdom, the army was tasked with the elimination of demon beasts and repelling foreign country’s invasion. They also had full control over the territory assigned to them.
In addition to those two jobs, they were assigned to taxation, management of the city, and giving subsidies to institutions.

『That’s not the point, La’s-sensei. Please wait for a while, I promise you that I’ll make a killing. 』

***

After leaving the 《Romburgh Underground Ruin》, we went to exchange the harvested materials for gold as soon as we arrived in 《Romburgh City》.
I sold one wight’s battle bone, two of the goblins’ battle bones, and hobgoblin’s battle bone for around 80k Temis.

「I never expected for us to get this much money in one go….」

I was deeply moved as I felt the weight of my purse in my bosom pocket.
I mean, I obtained one month’s worth of my salary as a porter in just one day of being an adventurer.

And that much money didn’t include the Gold Maimai’s battle bone and Maimalgo.
I gave the Maimalgo to Mani since she was more interested in it.
Thus, leaving me with only the Gold Maimai’s battle bone.
And no matter where I sold it, it’ll take at least twice the amount of money to buy it back.
Since the possession of a C rank demon beast’s demon core was quite rare, it was currently in Mani’s custody.

Mani had told me since a long time ago that she wanted another magic vessel. One that wasn’t exclusively for smithing.
Selling the demon core was in fact, not that difficult but, we wanted to leave it for now as we’re making a profit from selling the other demon cores.

And then, I heard clapping sounds when I was about to enter the guild’s building.
When I turned around to see what just happened, I saw a tall bespectacled man.
He was a person I knew very well.

「F-… Fedor-san! You’ve returned.」

「Congratulation Dean-kun. I don’t know what has happened to you in the past few days as I had left to go to other places to complete my commission. But, it seems you stopped working as a porter and are taking the first steps as a proper adventurer huh? It seems you gained a wonderful magic sword too.」

Just when I wondered what made my surroundings so noisy, I found out that Fedor-san had returned.
Fedor-san was definitely amongst the five most influential adventurers in Romburgh.

The magic spear strapped on his back was called 《Wind Dominator’s Spear; Hale [C]》, it was common knowledge amongst the adventurers in Romburgh since the person himself didn’t try to hide it.
His style was manipulating wind’s magic and then he used the opening to bring certain death to his enemy with his spear.

Despite his ability, Fedor-san employed me as his porter twice, giving various kinds of useful advice, and even gave an additional reward for me.
He was the one who went out of his way first and foremost to call out to newbie adventurers.
Also, he was a superman who donated the majority of his income to the orphanage that raised him up.
When I heard his life story for the first time, I even doubted my ears. That story sounded like a lie to me.
The difference between him and a certain trash, who used 《Decoy》 on me in the demon labyrinth, who also haggled my reward, and still raised a complaint on top of that, was like heaven and earth.

「Just now were you going to receive your reward? I see that you got a few nice things there. With this, Mani-chan’s future is secured I guess.」

「P-Please stop with that teasing! Me and Mani have yet to, or should I say, not in that kind of relationship…. Eh… Ah, no, it’s….」

「As shy as ever huh….」

Fedor-san squinted his eyes and heaved a sigh as if slightly disappointed.

「Such a noisy fella. Fedor, I’ll go in first if your conversation is going to be a long one.」

It was a silver-haired girl around my age.
She had beautiful porcelain white skin and a well-ordered nose.
Despite her unworldly beauty, there was something ominous about her cold-red eyes that made me wanted to avert my eyes.
Strapped on her back was a magic sword almost as tall as her.

She might’ve come from an adventurer guild’s somewhere else since I had no memories of her amongst the adventurers in Romburgh City.
I mean, there was no way I can forget this extremely conspicuous girl.

「She’s the descendant of a nomadic tribe who was wandering around demon beast-infested areas outside of the army’s jurisdiction. The Narc tribe.」

I knew about them.
They called themselves the《Legman [Pure Human]》’s strongest tribe who lived freely. They wandered around the continent, traveling between small countries since more than a thousand years ago, even before the Ryud Kingdom came into existence. They kept wandering around despite being continuously targeted no matter where they go.
Since they never flocked with anyone outside of their own tribe, everything about them was basically surrounded by mysteries.
But, they had a unique culture. There was a theory that they gained their superhuman power by making a pact with a powerful demon beast in the spirit world.
Generally, people lived their lives without ever meeting any one of them.

「I met her by chance upon returning to Romburgh. Her name is Edda.」

I see…. The Narc tribe originally never used a route that was close to human civilization.
Fedor-san might’ve simply been unable to ignore a troubled girl who was clueless about normal common sense.
I thought it was impossible for a member of the Narc tribe to enter a city on their own and yet….

「You’re telling him too much about me, Fedor. It’s unpleasant.」

Edda’s red eyes which resembled that of a death god was looking at Fedor.

「Ah, my bad for the lack of consideration.」

Fedor-san bowed to the girl with wry smile on his face.
But…. As expected of Fedor-san. He helped anyone in need regardless of who they are.
I mean, I could only feel ominous signs from her no matter what.
