Sword of Gluttony Queen - Chapter 1 - Dean The Porter
Chapter 1 : Dean The Porter
If I have to begin to explain how adventuring works then, there are various roles amongst adventurers.
For the most part, in a standard party the vanguard fought in close combat, and or the rearguard who fired magic from behind kill demons.
If we’re to break the structure down even further, parties range from white magicians who heal the wounded adventurers, scouts whose duty was to survey the area and disarm traps, shield users whose duty was to act as a decoy, to environmentalists whose duty includes purifying miasma and to provide lighting. Basically, there are almost a countless number of roles.
A majority of them need talent, skill, special knowledge, and dedicated magic vessels for their field.
Magic vessels are a magical tool used as the medium to invoke magic.
Since there’s an affinity for each person to a magical vessel, one needs a suitable magical vessel if they wish to invoke high ranking magic perfectly.
In many cases, magical sword types which could be used both as a weapon due to its blade and are used as a magical vessel is currently mainstream.
Both magical vessels and their raw materials were extremely expensive.
A poor adventurer has no other choice other than putting their lives on the line to earn enough money, and yet that kind of adventurer is a contradiction since they couldn’t fight unless they have an expensive magical vessel.
And one couldn’t fulfill their role unless they have a magical vessel that has a correspondence to their talent.
In my case, my magical sword is called 《Poor’s Blade Popo》
Capped at the lowest rank [F] and almost no useful magic for battle, you might even say that its physical abilities assistance was nonexistent.
Nevertheless, this is something that I had made with the materials that I bought with my saved up money that I earned from doing odd jobs since my childhood. It was then made by my childhood friend, Mani the blacksmith master.
Naturally, my duties were to make good use of it.
「O~i, Dean-kun. Can you walk a little faster? Oh well, that’s too much for you right? Can’t you just run to follow our pace? 」
The one who added “-Kun” when calling for me was a man, who wore a gaudy mantle and a hat with a single feather affixed on it, Gilbert.
Also, the leader of this party.
「Oioi what a cruel person you are. You know that Dean’s magic sword barely if not any increases his physical attributes. If I’m not wrong, it should be made with goblin bones, right? Our current pace is the best for him.」
The other muscular and big man was Morgan.
I’m currently employed as a temporary adventurer by both Gilbert and Morgan to dive into the 《Battle Rat’s Hole》, the demonic labyrinth that’s D ranked which is located close to the city.
「Ahaha…… No, I can move faster it’s just the luggage that is heavy….」
I responded to them with my business smile.
No matter how angry I am or how much I wanted to beat them, I must bear with them for now. My only revenge was to act nonchalantly. I definitely couldn’t use my magic sword even if I wanted to.
「What are you talking about, it’s definitely because of the goblin bone right.」
My quick but indifferent reply was brushed off by Morgan, the cave then filled with their demeaning laughter. Despite my flushed face, I kept following them while shouldering the heavy luggage.
「Do your best then, Porter-kun. Though you really can’t do anything with that ragged magic sword, just hang in there.」
「…………」
Yes, I am what you call a porter. You can say that it’s the lowest of the low even amongst the role divisions. Their duties were to carry things like food, lamp, anything valuable they found in the labyrinth, and spare weapons.
The porter’s duty was usually assigned to a non-combatant such as a dismantler whose only use was to dismantle the defeated demon or demon beast, or a miner who can only mining ores.
But I’m none of those.
Though my sword’s form was still considered okay, my 《Poor’s Blade Popo》 was really a useless item for an adventurer.
Though it has enabled me to use 《Torch》 to light the surrounding area with a dazzling ball of fire, there’s no difference between using it and a mana lamp.
This mana lamp was a magical tool that used the energy of a flame stone to show the same effect as 《Torch》. Flame stones are expensive and asides from the price, mana lamps were also kind of fragile. But for me, I have to use a mana lamp since I didn’t have enough amount of mana to maintain 《Torch》.
This is the bitter reality.
Naturally, Gilbert also has his own mana lamp, but there was no way he would have lent his magic tool to me.
I would be in an unpleasant situation if I arbitrarily used his. That’s why I’ve prepared my own mana lamp and flame stone even if it meant that I’m cutting down on my own living expenses.
Why? Simply because breaking your mana lamp was a matter of life and death in the dungeon.
In short, I was the lowest ranked porter amongst the porter. I am of no use in combat. I also have no fixed adventurers who were willing to hire me since porter duty was considered as changeable position. As such, adventurers tended to hire porters that would be advantageous for them.
That is why my position was the lowest of the lowest.
Although I was hired by Gilbert, both his treatment and payment are bad. If he was injured, or in an extremely bad mood (mainly because they basically gained almost nothing even after diving into the demon labyrinth), my payout would be lowered even further.
Ironically, however, I’m still grateful to him for giving me this job. Even if his goal was to make me work my hardest with extremely low payment.
At the very least, I am capable of using magic to check the information of an object which is recorded in the 《World Record》 called 《Imu》, that was my magical tool capability.
The type of magic that was used to record was a magic that could be used by someone who was under the patronage of the wisdom god, 《Imu》. Back in the Era of the Gods, this was very specific magic, but nowadays, it’s a magic that is available for all.
Moreover, despite of 《Imu》’s death in the War of Ancient God’s legend, he sealed part of his own will in the 《World’s Record》 and used it for the assessment and naming of every single thing.
Though I don’t know how much I can trust such an ancient myth, it was an established fact that 《Imu》 is an all purpose appraisal method as long as someone has mana.
It’s not like I’m the sole user of 《Imu》, there are high ranking magic vessels and materials which couldn’t be appraised by my 《Imu》 due to my low mana capacity.
It seems that one needed appropriate amounts of mana to dig even deeper into the 《World Record》.
A while after following Morgan and Gilbert from behind, I barely managed to not lose the sight of them.
「……《Imu》」
I hoisted 《Poor’s Blade of Popo》 and then whispered so.
The crystal embedded on the base of my magical sword hilt shone, and then, strings of characters appeared in my head.

… that was the evaluation of the Wisdom God-sama had towards me.
This 【Lv】 was “Level”, it seems to be the indication of my “Odo” level.
Odo is soul power.
It’s the kind of power that exists in every single living being, according to the ancient myth, the Gods took Odo from the 《Sephiroth Tree》 to create animals and demons.
A living being who has Odo could take small parts of Odo to strengthen their own by injuring another being who has Odo in their body too.
This total amount of Odo level was what is referred to as “Level”.
As a 17-year-old adventurer, my【Lv:8】was considered the lowest of the lowest to be eligible to fight on the frontlines.
I also have done my own share of desperate training against weak monsters, but this is my current state.
By the way, Gilbert was 【Lv:18】, while Morgan was 【Lv:15】.
Since the quality of their magical sword was on another league compared to mine, I couldn’t win against them no matter how hard I tried.
【Lv:12】 was the standard for a normal adventurer.
At this rate, I would’ve long since passed the age of 20 years old before I arrived at that level.
