Chapter 14 – From Darkness into the Light

Lu Qiang replied with an “Oh?”.

Lu Yin straightened her waist and motioned for him to put her down.

Lu Qiang glanced at her, loosened his left hand, supported her back, and put her on the ground as gently as possible. The foot that had been injured was on tiptoe and she didn’t feel any pain.

Lu Yin jumped back, “Yeah… could you please help me get it?”

Lu Qiang looked at her, “What is it?”

“The key.” She pointed to the door beside her, “The door key.”

Lu Qiang looked at her one last time and turned upstairs.

It fell silent, the noise-activated lights on the second floor went out and darkness returned. Lu Yin quickly glanced upstairs. Seeing no movement, she crawled to the third floor, dragging her injured feet behind her.

She took her keys from her pocket, her hands shaking as she opened the door.

She entered and softly locked the door. She leaned against the door and felt the tension leave her body. She felt as if she was about to collapse.

After a long time, her breath turned steady. She fanned herself with her clothes. Her sweat had turned cold.

She remembered something, leaning her head to look out from the peephole.

Not long after, the noise-activated lights of the floor above turned on. Lu Yin held her breath and stared out the door unblinkingly. A tall figure entered her field of vision, head lowered and footsteps solid. The man was away from the light, his face was blurry and his expression unclear.

As he drew closer and turned the corner, he suddenly stopped in front of the door. Lu Yin’s breath hitched in her throat. She subconsciously went to turn off the lights, only to remember she didn’t turn them on when she entered.

The man stood in front of her door for a moment, leaning sideways. He took a cigarette from his pocket and drew two breaths, red ember lighting from within the ashes. He scratched his head with the hand with the cigarette and went downstairs.

He didn’t glance in her direction at all throughout.

Lu Yin finally felt her heart calm down.

Lu Qiang went from the third floor to the second floor, from the darkness to the light. He didn’t stop on the second floor, rather, raised his head and glanced at the pitch-black third floor. He looked at the light bulb above his head and went downstairs.

He stopped at the entrance of the building, leaning against the dilapidated door of the security post wanting to finish his cigarette.

A woman walked towards his direction with graceful steps, dainty heels tapping into the dark night. Lu Qiang instinctively assessed the woman’s figure, tall chest, long legs and swaying hips.

Lu Qiang narrowed his eyes and inhaled.

The woman approached him and smiled, “Mr. Security Officer, what happened on the rooftop?”

Lu Qiang said, “Nothing.”

“Nothing?” She didn’t believe him. She took a step forward, “Who could be so idle as to go to the rooftop and set things on fire?”

Lu Qiang said nothing.

She asked, “Male or female?”

“Female.”

“Young?”

“Yeah.”

She was eager to gossip, “What could have upset her, has she been dumped?”

Lu Qiang said, “No, she was burning paper.”

“Burning paper?” She looked confused, “For who?”

“Probably someone dead.”

His voice was low, appropriate for the occasion. A breeze blew, the women’s skirt lifted up, swirling above her legs. It was time for curfew, the lights in the small complex turned off with a click.

The woman screamed and plunged her head into Lu Qiang’s arms.

Lu Qiang hadn’t finished smoking. He put one hand in his pocket and held his cigarette in the other. He leaned against the door frame like that, not pushing her away yet not holding her either.

The woman was trembling. “I saw someone lighting a fire on the building across just now… It’s good if she was only lighting a fire. But, she was actually burning paper… How scary, was that woman crazy?”

Lu Qiang said, “Who knows.”

The woman said, “I’m a little cold.” As she spoke, she rubbed her chest against his, knowingly or unknowingly.

“It’s cold, yet you still changed your clothes.”

Half an hour ago, someone called the security office saying there was a fire on the rooftop of the building opposite. He was just about to go to sleep and reluctantly put on a pair of pants and walked over. The caller had been waiting downstairs and was wearing loose pajamas and cloth slippers. Her hair was unkempt and her figure was indiscernible… Now, she was like a whole new person.

Lu Qiang flicked his middle finger on the cigarette pinched between his fingers and it flew into the trash can. The woman hugged him tightly. He looped his hands around her and touched her a**.

The woman couldn’t help but tremble, standing on tiptoes at his touch and a groan slipped from her lips.

Lu Qiang squeezed and paused. His hands slid down, down her thighs and finally resting on her hamstrings.

It was a sensitive spot. She bent her legs and reached her hand backwards to clutch his as she giggled.

Not feeling it anymore, Lu Qiang withdrew his hand.

The woman said, “Mr. Security Officer, could you send me back? My house is right across the street, it’s too dark… I’m a little scared.”

Lu Qiang glanced at her, “Then you’ll have to find a bodyguard, that isn’t part of my responsibility.”

He removed her hand, too lazy to look at her, and walked directly to the security office in the distance.

The complex was silent and still, a dark road ahead. His footsteps were lonely, facing an unknown future, just like he had his whole life. Lu Qiang rubbed his bald head and suddenly laughed, as if at this moment, he once again ascertained his plans.

The road ahead also lit up.
