Chapter 27: Apprentice

Yes, there was no way this girl had done it all. She must’ve had help from someone…

“Lady Rose did everything by herself. In the past week, except for Lady Rose, no one came by this room.”

The staff member who had been listening to the side answered.

“…!”

Grayam couldn’t believe it.

“You…did all this by yourself? How?”

“…”

Elise hesitated. She had fixed the patients because they needed it, but it wasn’t something an intern could do. ‘What should I say?’ But she didn’t have an explanation, so she just made up a lie.

“I studied from books.”

“You…did this from books?”

It was a face filled with disbelief. Elise decided to be more forward.

“Yes.”

Grayam had a confused face. ‘No. Even if you study from books…there’s no way she can do treatment of this kind?’ As with everything, experience was the most important.

Even if one studied from books, if they didn’t have the experience to back it up it didn’t matter. So only those who were approved could take the empire’s test to become a doctor. ‘But what happened?’

He looked at the young girl. The girl that looked like she should be elegantly drinking tea at a tea party did this?

“Is there something I did wrong, sir?”

“N-No.”

“Then are you here to observe the patients today?”

And Grayam remembered what he came here for. ‘They said to take good care of her since she was recommended by Viscountess Kate.’ He remembered the hospital director’s orders.

“Ro…se?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Ok, Rose. Today is the last day you’re in charge of this ward.”

“Then?”

“Starting from tomorrow, follow me.”

Grayam explained.

“I’ll teach you myself.”

“…!”

They were a teacher and apprentice. He was saying he now acknowledged her as a disciple and wanted to teach her.

Elise bowed her head.

“I will. Thank you, sir.”

Grayam looked at her with a complicated expression. ‘I’ll have to observe her from right next to her. Then I’ll know if she’s real or not.’

But Grayam couldn’t even imagine. That he hadn’t seen the real surprise yet.

***

A few days later in the Britia Palace. In the palace where the Emperor resided, two men were having a conversation. It was Emperor Minchester, and his doctor, Viscount Ben.

“Your Majesty, how are you feeling now?”

“I don’t know if I’m getting better. Even after a good sleep, I still feel tired.”

Ben lowered his head at what he said.

“I apologize. It is because I am lacking.”

“No. I’m riddled with a horrid disease. How is that your fault? If you are lacking, then all the doctors in the empire must put their stethoscopes back down.”

The Emperor spoke softly. Viscount Ben was one of the greatest doctors in the Imperial Cross Hospital. If he didn’t know, no one in this empire would. ‘Since not even doctors can treat everyone. Even if medical knowledge has advanced.’

Although it had improved, there were still limits. He didn’t want to hold his physician at fault for that. ‘It must be karma.’ The Emperor had a bitter face. It thought that it might be because the heavens were punishing him .But it was then…

Someone who had been silently listening to their conversation spoke. It was the Crown Prince, Linden de Romanoff.

“Do you really not know?”

“I apologize, Your Highness. I’m doing my best but….”

The Crown Prince frowned, and thought of his conversation with Elise.

“Then have you heard of this disease?”

“Which disease?”

“Last time, someone said that if something called blood sugar increased in the Emperor’s body it would have similar symptoms to this, have you heard about it?”

“…!!!”

Viscount Ben’s eyes widened.

“The concentration of sugar in blood? Are you talking about the metabolite of carbohydrates?”

“I think so. Do you not know?”

“…!!!”

The physician had an expression like he had just been smacked. The Emperor and Crown Prince were confused at his reaction.

“What’s wrong?”

But Ben didn’t answer the Crown Prince. He didn’t have the mind to.

‘Now that I think about it…the Francoen Republic released an article about this…and the symptoms were similar to the Emperor’s…! Heavens!’ The Emperor’s symptoms flashed through his head. Tiredness, polyuria…! It was exactly like the symptoms in the paper!

‘How…did I miss something like this?’ It was probably because it was a paper from another land.

“Diabetes mellitus.”

The Emperor and the Crown Prince had strange faces.

“What is it, Ben?”

Ben burst up from his seat.

“Please forgive me, Your Majesty, I think I need to study this diagnosis that the Crown Prince spoke about!”

And as he was about to rush out of the room, he asked the Crown Prince a question.

“Your Highness! Who is the doctor that told you about this diagnosis? They must most definitely be a famous doctor! I must speak about this with that person..”

“…”

The Emperor and the Crown Prince looked baffled. Famous doctor? That child?
