Chapter 185: Deceiving Uncle Sheng (84)

But Ji Xubai didn’t continue strangling Wen Zhigu. He left her a little breathing space. But she had no strength left and just fainted.

Ji Xubai caught her and held her in his arms. As he thought of how Wen Zhigu saying that she’d wanted to kill the child all this time, his face took on an uncertain look.

……

The Sheng armies arrived at the capital three days later.

Sheng Qianmo had intended to enter the palace, but because he was recovering from the poison, he planned to return to his manor, while letting Ningcheng Yuan and the others meet the emperor first.

Sheng Qianmo was supposed to take Shu Nuan and Xuan Jiu back with him, but Ningcheng ran over to him and spoke while wearing a sympathetic look.

“Brother Sheng, you’ve had enough trouble along the way. Let me share the burden with you. Why don’t you do this: Give me the Nanchao boy and I’ll interrogate him in your place.”

Sheng Qianmo didn’t disagree. Ningcheng hurried to get his people to take Xuan Jiu back to his mansion.

When Sheng Qianmo returned to the Shenghe Palace, it was already dark.

He ordered the imperial physician to go to the cell of Shu Nuan to treat her injuries. After waiting for news for a long time, he went to her cell in the middle of the night.

The guard acting as the jailer saw him coming and saluted, “Your Highness.”

Sheng Qianmo let the guard open the cell.

Through the torch in her cell, Qianmo saw Nuan sleeping while leaning against a corner.

Her hair was still messy, sticking to her forehead, and he was unable to make out her face.

Her right hand was plastered and the other was placed on the wet hay. Her little hand was delicate, but now the nails were cracked. The skin had broken on her fingers and blood caked them, while the back of her hand was red and swollen blue. He had trodden on it without mercy.

He stared at her for a while, and she seemed to have perceived that he was staring at her, as her eyelashes flickered, before her eyes opened slowly.

Like a hopeless butterfly, she looked at him in a dull manner, no expression on her face, and no emotional change in her eyes.

Her eyelashes were long, and her beautiful eyes were as clean as ever. They looked beautiful in the light of the fire. But there was not a single spark in them, only indifference.

She looked at the man standing in front of her for a moment, then slowly lowered her eyes and closed them.

“Why do you know him?” Sheng Qianmo asked lightly.

She knew he would eventually be willing to give her the opportunity to explain, but Shu Nuan was reluctant to talk to him.

Her eyes remained shut as she breathed weakly, without saying a word.

Sheng Qianmo slowly leaned down and squeezed her chin. His low voice carried a dangerous sharpness, as he said, “Tell This Prince, did you join him to hurt me?”

Sheng Qianmo didn’t know why he was giving her a chance to explain. He didn’t even know what he was going to with the answer, but it seemed he wanted her to convince him somehow.

Shu Nuan was forced to open her dim eyes and she lowered her gaze toward her injured hand. She was silent and indifferent to his words and eyes.

As a result, Sheng Qianmo’s face became colder. In his mind, he had walked from the courtyard to this cell to see her, and in doing so he had lowered his pride, but she hadn’t shown an inkling of affection.

Sheng Qianmo stared at her coldly for a while, and said with a hint of indifference in his tone, “This Prince will see how long you can protect that person.”
