Chapter 18: Cruel War (2)

“What is this?” The sergeant tumbled to the ground, affected by the power of the bomb. Despite this, he got up on his feet despite struggling. Looking towards the bombed bunker fortress, he saw a large steel machine crawling towards him slowly like a monster. The bodies of the Germans on the ground were crushed to pieces by those wheels.

“Those damned animals, they have a tank too? I was wrong… We won’t last ten minutes, but ten seconds. The defense line will be torn open!” The sergeant looked desperate.

As the German tanks neared closer, they adjusted the direction of their tank shelling; and just a moment before the second shell was fired, there was an equally dull and loud sound behind the sergeant.

Boom!

Not only was the shelling sound loud, but the impact landed on the barrel of the German tank at a distance of forty meters. It happened to be that the second shell of the German tank had yet to fire from its hole as it immediately exploded under a bright spark. The German tank turned into a pile of scrap iron, resulting in many casualties among the German sides.

“Nice!’

The American soldiers immediately jumped with joy.

With the black sergeant’s eyes wide open, the desperate situation turned around under the booming blast from behind. He could not help but turn his head.

It could be seen that more than ten meters behind the pit defense front, a strong and handsome young man with a rocket launcher resting on his shoulder was walking towards him.

Seeing the many American soldiers’ eyes focused on him, Kyle smiled ruefully. “Kyle Soldiers, coming in as your reinforcement!”

The bitter and cruel war lasted a whole night…

After dawn fell and the sun rose from east watching the casualties of the battlefield, the Germans finally gave up their suicidal strategies and retreated in tides.

It was a brief victory for the Americans––no, it was a terrible victory! The line of their defense was split between the living and the dead. Bodies of dead German and American soldiers piled up one after another on the wilderness and several kilometers of land turned the scorched earth to a dark red blood.

Countless of the remaining American soldiers had not the strength to cheer. They’ve gone through a night of continuous battle in high alert without rest. They were physically and mentally exhausted. After the battle was over, albeit briefly, some fainted to the ground, their hands still gripped on the rifle.

Towards the side, Kyle sat in the pit with the same tired face, his body covered with blood and dirt. The events he experienced the night before was unprecedented.

Despite the skill of sharpshooters, a bullet can reap a life, but in the harsh living environment of the battlefield couple with the continuous influx of enemy troops, he was also put under great pressure that he had never felt before.

It was like a tug-of-war against death. Would he die? No, he can’t. There are things he needs to see through, so throughout the entire night, his body was tight, mind daring not to slack one bit else he falls to the prey of death.

This was a world war and he must face it through ‘till the end alive!

It was not until the enemy retreated that Kyle finally sighed relievingly.

“Soldier, your name is Kyle?” The black sergeant struggled to get over. One of his left eye was completely destroyed and his hand wounded by a bullet, but he grinned happily. “Look at you, so young! Is this your first time on the battlefield?”

“Yes, sir.” Kyle nodded while gasping for breath.

“This is your first time in war, moreover a large scale war! Your performance is too good to be treated as a fresh recruit. When I go back, I will request you be promoted for your meritorious service.” The sergeant exclaimed.

“After going through such a war, I am still alive. This is more than enough for me. It is a blessing from the goddess of victory.” Kyle said with a melancholic tone.

“Yes, you’re lucky to be alive,” The sergeant smiled and said, “But wait a little longer. Soon there will be reinforcements from the rear to replace us. We can have a good rest for half a day right after.”

“Rest? I’m afraid I can’t.” Kyle shook his head and smiled softly. Patting the pocket of his uniform, he said, “I have something very important to over to the colonel!”
