Chapter 6 – Aphrodisiac

Cai Xin told him she could lend him money, but Zhang Heran insisted he couldn’t receive money for no reason. If he took the money, he had to pay it back in some way; Cai Xin would say that “You can’t help me on this, you’re not suitable for this,” Zhang Heran would reply with “Look how miserably I’m living now…” In the end, they were stuck in this endless loop and no one could get out. Finally, Cai Xin was so annoyed by him that she lost her temper, “Zhang Heran, oh, Zhang Heran. Under your physical capabilities, I finally have a profound understanding of two idioms! One is “the soul of a deceased has not yet dispersed”!”

Zhang Heran beamed, his eyes twinkling. He asked, “What about the other one?”

Cai Xin replied feebly, “Did I owe you something in my previous life?”

Zhang Heran beamed, his eyes twinkling. He said, “Senior Sister, that’s not an idiom, it’s a sentence!”

Cai Xin was driven crazy by him. “Who cares whether it’s an idiom! Tell me honestly, kid, what kind of medicine are you selling in your bottle gourd1 [javascript:void(0)]What do you have up your sleeve??”

Zhang Heran was still grinning like a Cheshire cat, his eyes twinkling, “It depends on what medicine Senior Sister wants!”

Cai Xin growled, “Aphrodisiac! You have any?”

Zhang Heran laughed so hard that his brows curved upwards, he looked even better than back then when he was still in his prime. “I don’t have aphrodisiac but some chicken soup (for the soul) will do.” He patted Cai Xin on the shoulder, “Senior Sister, don’t bow your head, for your crown will slip off; don’t cry, for the bad guys will laugh; don’t be discouraged, for life is beautiful; and also don’t be afraid of what you owe me from your past life, you can just pay me back in this life.”

Cai Xin looked at Zhang Heran, looked at the previously all-powerful campus male god before her. Now, he was an unimaginable combination of refined and roguish, she only thought to herself that nothing was permanent in this world. Her mind was in a jumble.

She heard back then that this Junior Brother was as cold as snow lotus on an icy mountain. Who would have thought that he would one day, because of money, he would become this unshakable pain in the neck.

She took a deep breath and in a deep voice, said to Zhang Heran two words, “Get. Out.”

Cai Xin began to try to contact other users on that website. But what was weird was that there were several occasions when she would send a message, the person would reply quickly and they would communicate well initially. However, when they were about to agree on a deal, the other party would suddenly go radio silent or would have already received other customers.

Cai Xin felt it was completely impossible. She didn’t know that there were so many women in China wanting to rent a boyfriend to bring back for New Year’s now, quietly draining out this already niche market until the supply fell short of the demand. She lamented that being a woman was difficult, that it was even more difficult being an independent woman in a big city as she browsed the internet for more candidates. She also continued to diligently like Liu Yishuang’s posts every day but no matter what she was unable to find a solution.

She couldn’t find a suitable person on the website and Liu Yishuang still had no idea who “I’m Done For” was. As she became more and more anxious every day, Yue Sisi added more to her frustrations. Yue Sisi invited her to meet up after work to eat, chat and discuss life’s problems.

Cai Xin knew then that Yue Sisi was probably going to change boyfriends again.

Sure enough, Yue Sisi told her, “There’s a nouveau riche pursuing me recently, should I accept?”

Cai Xin prodded, “What about the one before?”

Yue Sisi sighed, “He was only a pretty face, useless.”

Cai Xin couldn’t take it anymore. She understood why Yue Sisi was always changing boyfriends – she didn’t have a father, maybe she wanted different men to fill this void.

Cai Xin wanted to stop this conversation. She told Yue Sisi that she went on that website and found an “Uncle Zhang”, but didn’t expect that “Uncle Zhang” would actually be Zhang Heran.

“Zhang Heran?” Yue Sisi was so surprised that she spilled her tea when she heard this name. “Zhang Heran, as in the campus male god of your university back then? No way! Liu Yishuang said before that he would never give in to anyone no matter how talented they were, with the exception of this junior brother of yours! Goodness, did you actually pick him? Hahaha, was he in that bad of a situation or are you just super lucky in love?”

Cai Xin sneered, “I don’t have any plans to hire him, thank you.”
