Chapter 81: Hanging Between Life and Death (1)
After a while, he said, “Xingzhi was poisoned very badly and he’s…in a life or death situation right now.”
The book in Zhou Xiaoxiao’s hands fell to the ground with a thump.
“This time, our troops had won and Xingzhi had repeatedly made miraculous contributions to our victory, killing the South Vietnam king and taking dozens of people from the royal family at least. We were about to head back to the capital with them and was just waiting for the Emperor to offer us our rewards after taking a look at the royal family. We were all delightful and cheerful that we were off guard and jumped by crafty scoundrels without prior notice in the forest.”
Cheng Shizhao clenched his teeth and his face was full of rage, like a ferocious beast about to explode anytime.
“When I saw that we were approaching the capital city the day before, I was extremely happy in my heart. Xingzhi entered my tent and saw new pastries on the desk, remembering you right away. Therefore, he took a bite…and then he was in this state now.”
He broke the armrest of the wooden chair and he didn’t even feel the sharp fracture digging into the palm of his hand.
“We head back as quickly as we could and brought him into the capital. But the imperial physicians could do nothing but slow down the poison. Everyone knew that it was hopeless. It was meant for me but he ended up enduring this for me again!”
The bright red blood flowed oozed between his fingers and dripped on the ground, converging to a puddle.
“Where is Xingzhi right now?” A voice rang.
Cheng Shizhao stared at the puddle of blood and snapped out of his trance, calming his irritated mood.
He looked up to see the woman across him sitting steadily.
He laughed sarcastically, mocking himself. Right. When was this woman ever afraid?
The so-called love was nothing more than this after all.
“Bring me to see him, ok?” Zhou Xiaoxia asked and stood up, tumbling over due to lack of balance.
Thankfully, Cheng Shizhao held onto her elbow just in time and he could feel her shaking.
Cheng Shizhao’s heart softened. As it turns out, she was also scared and Xingzhi did mean something to her in the end.
This was the first time he comforted someone. “You don’t need to be too anxious. I’ve already promised Xingzhi that if he recovers from the poison, I will use the WangFu’s power to make sure you guys will be married. If he…then we will address each other as brothers and sisters and I will take care of you for the rest of my life. I won’t do anything out of my boundaries and I, Cheng Shizhao, will vow to the Heaven!”
“But I just want to see him right now. Can you bring me to State Duke Residence?” Zhou Xiaoxiao raised her head and stared at him. Tears fell down her face and dripped on the back of Cheng Shizhao’s hands, making him feel as if he was scorched by the tears.
He turned his face to the side and said, “You can’t go. Influenced by anger, Aunt said that if something happens to Xingzhi, she will make you pay for it. If you’re in trouble as well, what am I supposed to say to Xingzhi? Come to my WangFu to avoid this situation for now.”
As he said this, the door to the courtyard was suddenly opened and Juanzi hurriedly ran over.
The Lady of State Duke followed behind with a gloomy face.
Lady Guo walked over to Zhou Xiaoxiao in large strides and there was faint anger in her eyes; her body couldn’t help but tremble.
Cheng Shizhao reached over and blocked her. “Aunt!”
Lady Guo glared at him harshly and said in a hoarse voice, “Zhao’er, you still don’t know what you did wrong?”
Cheng Shizhao looked down in shame and embarrassment. “Aunt, I’m sorry about younger cousin but…”
Lady Guo brushed her sleeves and interrupted him, lifting her thin finger up at Zhou Xiaoxiao. Her lips were moving but she wasn’t saying anything.
After a moment, she placed her finger down and fisted her hands. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath before saying in difficulty, “Xingzhi, he…you probably already know. He’s unconscious right and between a life or death situation, he is still vaguely calling out your name.”
Tears flowed down her face and her voice was hoarse; she clutched her chest and continued, “He only has you in his heart. I’m his mother and I would be shameless if I need to for my son today! I especially came to invite you over and accompany him with the little time he has left, granting him his last wish.”
“Just tell me if you’re willing or not!” She twisted her handkerchief in nervousness and was about to make her salutations at her.
