How am I supposed to sympathize with that lunatic Mathias? He’s humiliated her, sexually assaulted her, and now he’s even hit her and pulled her hair. He’s a fucking narcissist and egomaniac who thought about killing her for being with Kyle. And they’re supposed to stay together?! And most readers will forgive him because he’s a millionaire and excessively handsome. But if he were someone ugly, would they still adore him? Would they still excuse his flaws?! If they’re going to end up together, I hope they show how toxic a relationship would be with someone as controlling and narcissistic as him.

This is an exceptional and atypical story with well developed characters, if you can get past the part that the ML is a deeply flawed person and in that era, what ML did was “common place” among the powerful.
It’s like a little boy who annoys the girl he likes to draw her attention. Except the little boy is a powerful grown man, whose personal growth was stunned when he assumed the Duke title at the age of 12.
I’m happy with the ending, although I wish something more for the secondary characters. They deserve better, especially Kyle.
I also “enjoyed” how deliciously evil the secondary characters are. I was truly surprised by what Kyle’s mom did and how preceptive everyone was (except those directly involved/in love).
