The Duchess and the Devil - Chapter 88.2
Full of hope of finding an answer, Judith arrived at the chapel. But nothing has changed here either. No matter how long she waited, there was only a ringing silence around, which together with her mourned the soul of the devil. In an instant, all life force disappeared again.
But suddenly something warm touched her shoulder. Surprised eyes widened. Judith immediately turned her head. The brief moment felt like an apocalypse.
– Derrick? – she said quietly, but saw a face that she had never seen in her life.
A dazzling white dress and gray hair. The man looked like a priest.
– Sorry. It seems I scared you with my sudden appearance.
Hope subsided again, giving the body into the hands of indescribable despair. But the priest smiled softly.
— Did something bad happen?
– A? – Judith asked incomprehensibly.
– Why are you crying like that?
Only then did Judith notice that tears were running down her cheeks. She immediately wiped them with both hands. The Duchess had not cried for many months, thinking that there were no more tears left.
“It’s just… It seems God doesn’t want to help people.”
Sometimes Judith was surprised at how quickly complete strangers could be trusted. Before her stood a priest who looked like an angel, not a man. Perhaps that is why she wanted to tell him everything that was on her soul. Unlike the migrating aristocrats, such a person would not condemn her. The silent priest only listened to Judith, without saying anything. But when the silence became heavy, the Duchess realized that she had said something unnecessary and meaningless.
“Please pretend you didn’t hear this, ” Judith took out her pocket watch, realizing that fifteen minutes was almost up.
She bowed her head to say goodbye, but when she was about to leave, the priest suddenly spoke:
– Wait.
Judith immediately stopped and looked at him.
“The devil is always watching us.” “I’ll give you the answer soon, ” the soft voice sounded like the waves of the sea.
What was said cut deep into her heart, making the Duchess tremble.
– What? – she asked again, noticing the smile at the corners of her lips that she had seen on other demons.
– What?
The priest’s face immediately changed.
– What did you just say?!
Judith raised her voice.
– The Lord is always watching over us…
The man stuttered, not expecting such a violent reaction from the girl. He repeated the same thing, but instead of “devil” the word “lord” now appeared; however, after this, with a trembling hand, he pointed to the fresco, where a verse from the Bible was engraved.
– He sees everything.
