The Duchess and the Devil - Chapter 71.2
As soon as Judith appeared at the table, the entire conversation focused on the relationship between her and the Duke. A month ago, she felt embarrassed, but she had already gotten used to it, so she could calmly answer exciting questions and laugh with other Ladies.
Judith looked around, pretending to look at the attendant. But really, she just needed to know where Sylvia was now. The girl was sitting at another table in the same pavilion. As at the Duchess’s table, there seemed to be a friendly atmosphere among the ladies. And only Sylvia stood out and looked like a dark cloud in a clear sky.
Looking closer, Judith noticed red eyes, as if the girl was about to cry. And from the first glance at her, you could guess why she felt this way. The Duchess suddenly remembered Derrick, who refused her scarf. That’s when Sylvia ran out of the tent in tears.
No matter how the Duchess looked at what happened, the girl’s behavior seemed unceremonious and frivolous. It seemed that Sylvia did not know or hear at all about the rumors that were circulating around them. Of course, she may have lost her ability to think because of love. But such stupidity made Judith laugh. Now Sylvia seemed pathetic, as she once was. After all, Derrick, who loved the girl, is dead.
The Duchess did not feel sorry for Sylvia at all.
Previously, before they met, Judith thought that the girl was just a young and innocent Lady who was also betrayed and deceived by her husband. But it was all just a pretense. After all, such outrageous behavior harmed everyone around.
— By the way, did you give the Duke a handkerchief? – the Countess asked curiously, sitting on the opposite side of the table.
Judith smiled slightly and answered softly:
– Yes, sure.
At that moment, the Duchess felt Sylvia’s sharp gaze on her. As soon as she heard the Duke mentioned, she immediately looked at Judith and the Countess.
“He was very happy to accept it.” Therefore, I can be proud of my work,” Judith unknowingly added to her speech when everyone thought that she had finished speaking.
Having said this, the Duchess reached for the dessert on the table, but remembering the last tea party, she suddenly stopped. Fortunately, the other ladies did not feel any discomfort last time, which made Judith feel calmer.
Suddenly the air became cool, causing the Duchess to stroke her shoulders to warm up. Fortunately, the Marquise was sitting next to her, who managed to become friends with Judith and supported her in difficult moments at tea parties. This made me feel calmer. The girl gracefully lowered the cup back onto the table and said, leaning towards the Duchess:
– Why do you continue to look for Hannibal?
The cold came unexpectedly, like a sudden downpour: not because of the temperature in the hall, but because of the goosebumps on the skin. Judith panicked at the mention of such an unexpected name from the Marquise’s lips. The Duchess could no longer calm down: the girl’s eyes, which were usually dark blue, suddenly became red, like a demon’s.
Jumping up from her seat, Judith walked away from the table with a loud noise.
– Duchess?
– Something happened?
The Duchess turned and noticed that the eyes of all the Ladies who were sitting at the table were red, just like the Marquise’s. Judith was numb and could not move, as if she had stepped in a swamp. The chain of thoughts moved randomly and chaotically in my head, the view before my eyes became blurry and blurry. Judith knew one thing: now she just had to run away.
-Where are you going, Ma’am? – they shouted after her.
Trying to escape, Judith tripped over a chair. She seemed to be about to suffocate from the countless red eyes staring straight at her. The Duchess lost consciousness at the moment when everything around her turned bright red.
