Pharaoh’s Concubine - Chapter 16

Buka blew a whistle and a shrill sound resounded through the sky. Not very far away, an eagle slowly flew over and circled through the air a few times over his head, landing gently on his strong left arm.
“Well done, Lu! Here’s some meat for you.” Buka took out a piece of fresh meat from the cloth bag he carried and handed it to the majestic eagle on his arm. Lu lowered its head and Buka placed the meat in its mouth.
Buka, a young man, was 17 years old this year. He had a sturdy body, wheat-colored skin, and short red hair that looked like a burning flame akin to the golden sun in the sky. Lu, on the other hand, was an 18-month-old eagle with rich, vivid brown quills and deep black eyes. With its wings spread in the blue sky like a high-flying kite, it looked magnificent while brandishing an imposing manner. Lu was Buka’s best friend, tamed and raised by himself. Their relationship was like that of brothers.
Lu flew down from Buka’s left arm to the ground, slowly enjoying the delicious lunch that Buka handed to him. Buka threw the backpack behind him in the golden desert, sat on it, and unfolded the left hand side of the cloth, before he rewound it once more. Suddenly, Lu, who was beside him, stopped eating. It raised its head alertly, and looked in the other direction.
“What is it, Lu?”
Lu ignored its master, holding its meat as it looked in a certain direction.
Buka also turned his head. Suddenly, in another part of the desert, a dazzling golden light more intense than the sun appeared. Buka closed his eyes reflexively and quickly blocked the blinding light with his arms. Lu seemed to be frightened, and loosened the meat in its mouth while flying alertly in front of his master.
After a while, Buka felt that his surroundings had returned to normal, and slowly lowered his arms and opened his eyes. The desert was calm as if nothing had happened.
“Lu, let’s go and see what happened.” Buka stood up and took a machete out of his back pocket. “Don’t be afraid, let’s go together.”
Lu flew gently ahead of its master.
Buka smiled. “Good job, Lu!”
He accelerated his pace and ran towards the origin of the light that he’d seen. About five minutes ahead, Buka saw something lying on the sand from a distance, but Lu was already slowly circling not far above the thing. Moving closer, Buka saw the outline of a person. Was it a lost traveler? Buka hurried forward a few steps and walked to the unconscious person.
It was a handsome boy! Buka was afraid that the boy was younger than himself. He had wheat-colored skin, short black hair, and thin arms. But looking at his outline, he seemed like a foreigner.
“A foreigner? Perhaps a Hittite?” Buka placed his scimitar beside him and took out his water bag. He gently lifted the boy and set his head on his arm. “Oh, he’s so light and thin. He’ll die quickly in this place.” He unscrewed his water bag and opened the boy’s mouth, slowly pouring water.
Suddenly, the young man coughed, but Buka didn’t notice and continued pouring water into his mouth.
The young man coughed violently, his body trembling and his eyes wide open. Buka saw a pair of beautiful, aqua blue eyes that were the same color as the clear sky.
“Huh … I almost choked to death.” The young man took a deep breath. It wasn’t very easy to stop his spasming. His beautiful eyes met Buka’s, and at that moment, his reflexes played out. He sat up suddenly, his forehead hitting Buka’s chin. The collision almost got Buka to cry out in pain. Above his head, Lu screamed alertly, and Buka hurriedly waved to the sky.
“What are you doing? You’re too close to me!” said the young man fiercely, covering his forehead. Buka found it hilarious. It was obviously the young man who had hit his chin, but the guilty party was filing the suit. The young man didn’t pay attention to Buka’s thoughts, instead looking for something while peering left and right.
“Lu!” Buka stood up and called for his close partner. Lu glided down and stopped on Buka’s shoulder. Buka placed the scimitar on its back and walked back to where he came from, not paying attention to the young man behind him.
“Hey, wait!”
A yell came from behind him, and Buka turned around helplessly. The handsome boy was running towards him with a strangely shaped backpack. He looked at the young man carefully. It was not only his backpack that looked strange, but also his clothes! His light blue and white pants were frayed with white lines on the edges. And how could his shoes look so heavy? With all of the straps on them, how could he wear them comfortably?
“Please wait! I have something to ask you,” said the boy breathlessly. Buka couldn’t help but laugh with contempt. He ran only two steps and he was already breathless.
“What’s the matter?” Buka couldn’t help but hold his head up and puff up his chest.
“How’s Bifitu doing? Has he been crowned or is he still a prince?”
What? Buka froze for a moment, not knowing what the boy was talking about.
“Bifitu! You don’t know who he is? …… Oh, right.” The young man pondered for a moment. “I was wrong. I meant Ramses II. Did he succeed the throne?”
The young man, though, was actually Ivy. She didn’t think it was urgent to worry about the fact that she was lost in the desert. The first thing she did upon waking up was asking this kind of no-level question. Buka gave the boy a glance.
“Please, let me know! Or is he already … dead …”
“Bah, bah!” Buka interrupted the boy loudly, “You’re the one who is dead! The new Pharaoh succeeded the throne three days ago! Where did you come from to not have known this?! “
“Huh … That’s great!” Ivy let out a sigh of relief, a smile appearing on her face. She made it just in time! God really treated her well. When she placed on the bracelet, she hadn’t known where it’d send her! It seemed that she’d made a correct gamble this time!
Buka watched him look anxious and happy for a while, and found it quite interesting. So instead of turning around and walking away immediately, he confronted the young man with a condescending gesture and said, “My name is Buka, the son of Sittat village’s chief. Who are you? ”
“Sittat village? “
“I asked for your name.”
“Oh.” Ivy thought about it for a moment. “My name is I … I.. Ivy.”
“Huh? Ivy? Such a weird name. Which country are you from?”
“Britain. Where is the village of Sittat? Are we in Egypt?”
What the hell was Britain? Buka felt as though he couldn’t communicate with Ivy at all. She didn’t even know the village of Sittat.
“Hurry up and tell me! Is the village of Sittat in Egypt? How far is it from Thebes? I’m going to Thebes … I’m going to the city Ramses II is at!” Ivy shook Buka’s arm as she spoke anxiously and urgently. She needed to be faster to see Bifitu sooner! The purpose of her return this time was to let him escape his predestined fate of death. She couldn’t delay her quest by even one second!
“Don’t shake my arm!” Buka pulled his hand back, feeling somewhat embarrassed.
“You’re acting like a woman! We’re in the area between Egypt and Libya. You’ve heard of Giza at least, right?”
It sounded very familiar. She seemed to have heard it somewhere, but she couldn’t remember it exactly. Ivy didn’t speak, and Buka continued.
“The village of Sittat is the largest and most prosperous village in the Giza region,” Buka stated proudly. “Thebes is very far from here. With your physique, it’d take several months to walk on foot. But if you wish to visit the Pharaoh, you’re very lucky. He just so happens to be at his palace in Memphis. You can make it there in ten days or so. But I reckon that the Pharaoh wouldn’t want to meet a hillbilly like you anyways. “
“A ten day journey? How do I get there?” Ivy asked quickly. Her blue eyes peered at Buka eagerly. Buka sighed continuously. This Ivy was a very troublesome person. Why couldn’t he just leave him alone?
“Forget it. I’ll do a good deed on a daily basis,” replied Buka. “Anyways, I’ll be going to Memphis to see my brother. Just follow me.”
