Chapter 211: Because I like Shu Nuan (15)

Duke Ji had often mused of the day he’d hold his grandchildren, far into the future. So he was surprised to know the day wasn’t so far off.

He’d always considered Ji Xubai to have a lazy personality and wasn’t expecting his heart to settle on a woman for some time. Thus, when his son came up to him that day and solemnly said that he would be marrying someone, the duke looked at him in amazement.

“Who?” the duke asked, surprised that his son wanted to start a family at such a young age.

Ji Xubai lowered his eyebrows for a moment, and said, “Wen Zhigu.”

Duke Ji’s face stiffened by a marginal amount.

The duke knew Ji Xubai’s situation when he’d still been teaching at the Yulin Academy. He knew that many of his students were famous in the academy, and that among them, a student named Wen Zhigu had an uncommon relationship with his son. Before, he’d assumed it’d be a short-lived affair, the impulses of a youth, and he’d lectured Ji Xubai several times over the matter. He’d never expected that his son would want to marry the girl.

Duke Ji ’s first reaction was to disagree. He frowned and said, “No. If I remember correctly, that girl was your student. Just what are you thinking? As a teacher, you should know how important reputation is to the academy. If you marry her, how do you plan to save face with your colleagues?”

“She is pregnant with my flesh and blood.”

The duke was shocked into a silence that he didn’t come out for a few minutes. He stood up, paced back and forth a few steps, then looked back at his son.

“I’ll be getting the chance to play with my grandchildren in the future?”

Ji Xubai nodded.

The stiffness in the duke’s face loosened in an instant as he burst out laughing.

“How long? Why didn’t you bring that girl back to the manor? And who else is in her family?”

“Almost two months. She lives alone.”

Duke Ji glared at him and said in a deep voice, “Two months!. How could you wait until now to tell your father about this? And you’re letting her live alone. If something happens to my grandchild, how would you compensate for my loss?!”

Ji Xubai smiled coolly, and said, “Dad, that’s not what you were saying before.”

“Bring her back to the manor this instant. How can you let her stay outside while she’s with child?”

Ji Xubai’s eyes were still cold. He was silent for a while and said, “Wait a few days. She is a bit reluctant.”

Hearing this, the duke Ji thought of something, frowned, and asked, “Xu Bai, tell me the truth. Did you force her?”

Ji Xubai narrowed his eyes and said clearly, “Our relationship has always been quite good.”

When he said this, he seemed to be trying to persuade himself.

They were quite good to each other.

Just not in love.

After Ji Xili returned to the manor, she learned that her brother wanted to marry one of his students. Her father was jubilant, but their step-mother, Madam Hou, didn’t display a similar reaction.

Ji Xili and Xubai’s mother had passed away at an early age. On the surface, Madam Hou acted kind to the brother and sister, but her first consideration had always been her own son. Upon knowing that Ji Xubai was about to give the duke a grandchild, it was natural for her to be displeased. If the child was a boy, her own son would lose his place in the duke’s eyes.
