Chapter 208: Because I Like Shu Nuan (12)
Shu Nuan took a few days to arrive at her destination.
Beichuan hasn’t changed much. Looking around, she found a broken balcony toppled by white grainy snow.
Following her childhood memories, she had the driver cross a few intersections before she got off the carriage. The Heng Manor stood before her. Seeing that it retained its original appearance, Shu Nuan froze.
She recalled being driven to this place when she’d been ten years old. Ever since the Qing fell, she hadn’t returned to Beichuan. She’d assumed that the manor and the city would have changed, but now she realized that wasn’t the truth.
Heng Manor stood intact, the same as the one in her memories.
“I thought Heng Manor had been occupied by people…” Xuan Jiu bitterly spoke.
Shu Nuan nodded and stepped forward in a daze. Suddenly, the gate of the manor opened, and an old man wearing a gray cloth came out with a broom.
As soon as the old man looked up, he saw the young girl and boy standing by the entrance with luggage beside them.
“Xiao Nuan?” cried out the old man in a trembling voice, tears streaming down his face.
Shu Nuan ran over to hug the old man. She sniffled and said, “Chen Bo, I’m back!”
While growing up here, most of her meals had been prepared by A’Che and Chen Bo. The old man in front of her had taken special care of her from an early age.
There was another reason why Chen Bo was so thrilled. He had believed that after the Qing’s demise, Shu Nuan had been captured, or worse. Therefore, when Shu Nuan and Xuan Jiu appeared in front of him again, the old man sobbed.
Chen Bo let her go and then noticed that her right hand was plastered. He immediately frowned and asked, “What happened to your hand? Who hurt you?”
Xuan Jiu snorted from his position beside the old man. He was just about to say something when Shu Nuan interrupted, “Just a fracture. The plaster should be unnecessary in a couple of days. It’s okay.”
Chen Bo realized that Shu Nuan had been wronged. He’d raised her and naturally knew how she behaved when suffering a grievance. However, he could see that Shu Nuan did not want to discuss it. The old man didn’t embarrass her, and instead he patted their shoulders and said, “Go ahead. It’s cold outside.”
Xuan Jiu responded, “Princess, go in with Chen Bo. I will first unload the luggage.”
Upon entering the Heng Manor, everything–from the large courtyard, to the grass and the trees–looked familiar to Shu Nuan.
Something caught her eyes. She walked over to an old pagoda tree where a swing swayed under the thick branches. Shu Nuan reached out to touch the rewoven swing rattan.
“Last year the swing was damaged in a storm, so A’Che made another one,” Chen Bo said.
Shun Nuan’s gaze trembled as she turned to look at Chen Bo.
“A’Che…came back here?”
Chen Bo nodded and said, “A’che will come back to see me from time to time. He fixed this old thing and does other stuff around the Heng Manor. After the Qing Kingdom fell, A’Che recovered Beichuan. At that time… We all thought that Xiao Nuan, you… A’Che was ill for a while at that time. When he finds out you are still alive… He will be very happy.”
So, A’Che had kept the Heng Manor intact, Shu Nuan thought.
She grasped the rattan and squeezed, and for a while she didn’t speak.
“Why are you still standing here? Hurry in!”
Xuan Jiu had unloaded their luggage and taken it inside. He had come to call them back to the house.
Entering the manor, Chen Bo poured hot water for the two of them. He was extremely gratified to see the two children back and in good health.
