How We Love - Volume 2 Chapter 6
Chapter 6 – “Don’t give up!”
Done shampooing, Mu Xiaonian sighed while covering Xu Zhifei’s head with a towel, “You haven’t been here for a really, really long time.”
Xu Zhifei smiled at him through the mirror, “It’s too expensive here, I can’t afford you anymore!” Her smile squeezed Mu Xiaonian’s heart.
When he first met her, she had been living the life of a princess, eating the best, using the best and interacting with the best. She idled in her position at her family’s company every day, coming in late and leaving early. She took almost every day off and didn’t have to worry about her livelihood. How could he have thought that one day this princess would actually have to go to an interview to support herself?
Mu Xiaonian covered Xu Zhifei’s head with a towel and wiped her hair. The edge of the towel covered her eyes so she couldn’t see those emotions he didn’t dare to reveal in his eyes through the mirror.
“You must be joking, did you forget? You invested in me, I won’t ever charge you when you come.”
Xu Zhifei lifted the towel and smiled as she looked at him from the mirror, “How can I do that? I’m fully capable of earning money.” She paused and smiled, “Xiaonian, thank you. But I don’t want others’ pity.”
Mu Xiaonian looked back at her from the mirror, smiled and nodded at her.
“Okay, got it.”
Mu Xiaonian tidied Xu Zhifei up and made her look lively. After Xu Zhifei expressed her thanks, she absent-mindedly bid him goodbye.
Mu Xiaonian looked at her departing figure. His heart jumped. He stopped her and asked her, fumbling over his words, “Xiaofei, take my store for example, okay? That time when I first dried your hair, there were only three dollars in my pocket. He paused and thought some more before telling her, “I was so miserable but that all changed for the better. So don’t be afraid, and don’t… give up. You have to push through!”
Xu Zhifei stood at the door and smiled at him through red eyes, “Okay! I’ll take your advice. I won’t give up!”
Xu Zhifei’s interview went successfully. She started working as a white-collar clerk in a trading company. Her house was foreclosed by the bank and she lived in her company’s employee dormitory.
Mu Xiaonian couldn’t imagine how Xu Zhifei, who had had an entire floor of a mansion to herself, could get used to living in a narrow room with five other people. What surprised him was that she found her footing quickly after losing her wings and falling despite having been a young lady for more than twenty years. She handled her friendships quite well, her five roommates didn’t outcast her for being a former heiress and they soon became friends.
Mu Xiaonian felt that Xu Zhifei was like grass. Although she looked delicate and weak, she was extremely strong inside. Plant her in a greenhouse and she could grow comfortably; plant her in the wild and she could still work hard to make herself thrive.
Mu Xiaonian asked Xu Zhifei, did Yi Hua ignore her after her family went bankrupt? Why didn’t they just get married, that way she didn’t have to suffer.
Xu Zhifei smiled as she told him, “I used to think that since my dad was around, I didn’t have to worry about anything. The only thing I had to do was eat, drink and play around. But one day all of a sudden, when I found out my dad wouldn’t be around to shelter me from the wind and rain, I was dumbstruck. I spent a long time to finally accept this reality, spent some more time to pick myself back up and continued to spend more time to face my future. I’m telling you, I was so close to collapsing, thankfully at the most critical moment, you lent a hand. That day I looked for you and asked you to make me look pretty, I told you I was going to an interview. In reality, I was planning to jump off a building that day. But before I left, you said to me, don’t give up, and cheered me up. That moment was so magical, I suddenly felt that I should live my life well. And then, I actually went for the interview.”
Xu Zhifei paused, sighed and smiled. She quietly continued, “The lesson my dad taught me was too great. I don’t want to live by relying on others anymore. Otherwise, when life strikes again, I’d rather die. So Yi Hua is Yi Hua, I am me and even if we get married in the future, I refuse to become someone else’s parasite. I have to rely on myself and be independent.”
