Episode 39: The other side of the mirror (3)

–

The assassin raised their sword without hesitation.

‘Is this how I die?’

The clear face of death fell over Aristine.

She never thought she would die so suddenly and futilely.

But at this moment, the claws of death were aimed directly at her, unable to be shaken away.

A sharp, glistening sword rushed towards Aristine.

Puk, red blood splattered in the air.

* * *

Everyday life in Silvanus was boring.

Tarkan tapped the hilt of his sword and swallowed a yawn.

Launelian was a very busy man and Tarkan wasn’t here to sightsee, so he had no choice but to shadow Launelian.

He couldn’t wait to get back to Irugo and hold Aristine in his arms.

“You, are you going to keep following me like this? At this rate, I bet my sister will get sick and run.”

“You think I’m here because I like it?”

“Please protect my sister’s privacy.”

“Meddling too much in a married couple’s affairs is unsightly.”

He couldn’t even get a word in.

Launelian’s eye twitched.

He huffed and burrowed into his papers again.

Looking down at Launelian’s back, Tarkan thought this was quite unexpected.

‘Isn’t this top-secret?’

Was it okay to just open Silvanus’s secrets right in front of him?

Not only that, Launelian even brought Tarkan with him when he was meeting other nobles.

‘Seriously, is this really okay? I don’t particularly care, but what does he plan to do if I go back and run my mouth?’

“What is it.”

Launelian spoke but kept his eyes on his documents, not looking at Tarkan.

“What is what?”

“You’re being loud.” Launelian replied, gesturing irritably.

“But I didn’t say anything.”

“Your thoughts are loud. Your face is loud. It’s distracting.”

What in the world did that even mean?

Launelian was definitely the fussiest guy he knew, as expected of someone from the noblest bloodline in the world.

“I’m just surprised that you take me everywhere you go without hiding anything. Doesn’t that document in front of you have national secrets?”

At those words, Launelian looked up from his papers and turned to Tarkan.

“I hope you don’t think I’m doing this because I like it.”

“Obviously not.”

Launelian sighed and stood up from his chair.

“Rineh said she wanted you to guard me. Yes, I’m annoyed to death but if having you by my side makes her feel at ease, then I don’t mind doing it.”

“Hmm.”

Launelian took out a bottle of whiskey from the cupboard in his office.

Tarkan picked up a glass in a very natural manner.

In the blink of an eye, they were on the same page. At some point, both men had grown familiar with one another.

“Although I say that, it does feel a little odd revealing confidential information like this but…”

Launelian shrugged his shoulder while pouring the whiskey into a glass full of ice.

“Well, Rineh has acknowledged you as family.”

In short, Tarkan was family, so he was showing Tarkan everything.

Because those words were quite unexpected, Tarkan’s eyes widened slightly.

Seeing that, Launelian looked like he was offended and added irritatedly.

“Look, you can never match up in my eyes. But my hands are tied. She is so silly and innocent that she gave her heart to a bastard like you.”

Tarkan was baffled to hear Aristine described as silly and innocent.

Just as he was about to say something, Tarkan sensed something unusual.

An eerie chill spread over his body, covering him from head to toe.

A sensation that could not simply be described as ominous.

It felt like a deep, dark abyss was gripping his heart.

Clang!

Tarkan immediately drew his sword and a thunderous noise boomed.

A black blade bursting from Launelian’s shadow collided with his golden aura.

The room shook with a shockwave, signaling a collision beyond mere blades.

The untouched whiskey glass broke and the papers on the table scattered carelessly.

The shadow flickered as if wanting to swallow Tarkan who was facing it.

‘The nerve—!’

Tarkan drew upon the energy in his entire body.

His aura shone so brightly that it seemed to consume the darkness.

A loud screeching noise ensued, threatening to scrape his eardrums.

At the same time, the blade made of shadow began to crumble.

The failed curse fizzled away like dust, and Launelian’s shadow remained calm as if its strangeness had never occurred.

Launelian sucked in a deep breath.

Despite sensing that the curse was gone, Tarkan did not relax. Or more precisely, he couldn’t relax.

Because the icy chill resting over his body had not left.

If anything, it had become stronger.

‘Rineh.’

His golden eyes darkened.
